Hello, I’m Sam.
Before I became a strategist, I spent 15 years in magazine publishing, starting as a humble assistant at the Design Council in London and going on to work as an editor, contributing editor and freelance journalist for media around the globe.
My training in print taught me a lot of things, not least of which was the resourcefulness required to craft a magazine on a shoestring budget. It also involved a strong visual sensibility, an eagle eye for detail and an intuition for storytelling, as well as the people skills to wrangle creative teams on rolling deadlines.
So when strategy work came knocking, it felt like an obvious fit for me — a way to explore my love for food, the built environment and art with a wider group of clients, collaborators and friends, through different media and platforms.
After almost two decades working between my home country of New Zealand, the UK and Europe, I found my way to New York City in 2012, and have lived here ever since. From my base in this ever-changing metropolis, my goal is to continue to connect and work with people from different corners of the globe on projects that are authentic, honest and genuinely engaging.
My writing portfolio, spanning 15 years covering design, architecture, art, unusual people and pastrami sandwiches.
